Donna Douglas (Elly May Clampett) of the Beverly Hillbillies Dead at 82: Video

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Donna Douglas, best known as Elly May Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies, died of pancreatic cancer Thursday at Baton Rouge General Hospital in Louisiana at the age of 82.

Douglas played the animal-loving daughter of Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen) and was a member of the hijinks-prone family that moved to Beverly Hills after they accidentally struck oil."

I was born and raised in San Francisco, but as a child I loved watching the country-oriented " The Beverly Hillbillies", for one reason only: Elly May Clampett.

Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen) was the moral backbone of the show, but he was boring as hell; Granny (Irene Ryan) was a ball of energy, but she was as old as dirt; Jane Hathaway (Nancy Kulp) had a deft comedic touch, but she was uglier than Satan`s wife; Jethro Bodine (Max Baer, Jr.) had movie star good looks, but he was as dumb as an ox, but Elly May Clampett (Donna Douglas) was quite simply the most beautiful woman in Beverly Hills.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" was a huge hit, but if it had been retitled " The Beverly Hillbilly" and the sole cast member had been Donna Douglas, it would have been the biggest hit in the history of television.

RIP Donna Douglas, you shall live forever in re-runs and in my heart.
