Kudos to President Obama for Saying the Word 'Nigger'

By Robert Paul Reyes

"It was a single word, just six letters long, but one that has not been spoken by an American president in public for generations.

President Obama invoked the word `nigger` in a podcast interview released on Monday to drive home his point that slavery still casts a long shadow on American life. But in the process, he touched a raw nerve in a country struggling to confront racism and hatred in the days after nine black parishioners were killed during Bible study in a South Carolina church.

`We`re not cured of it,` Mr. Obama said of racism during an interview for a `WTF With Marc Maron` podcast. `And it`s not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public. That`s not the measure of whether racism still exists or not.`"

New York Times

I have never heard an American president or any prominent politician utter the word "nigger`, so it was surprising to hear the first biracial president utter the most vile and reprehensible word in the English language.

The president didn`t invoke the racial epithet as an invective or in the heat of anger, it was Obama the former college professor calmly saying the dreaded word in the context of explaining that racism is still alive and well in America.

As a newspaper columnist and as a blogger is it my responsibility, to faithfully record history and current events. It is political-correctness run amuck and moral cowardice to substitute The "N-Word" for "nigger."

I applaud President Obama for using the word "nigger" and kudos to all the Web Sites and newspapers that didn`t shrink from using nigger in reporting this story.

Writing the "N-Word" doesn`t come close to capturing the hatred of a racist who shouts nigger  at a black American.

Enough with this self-censorship, journalists must honestly record the vile words emanating from the hateful hearts of racists. Racism must be exposed in all its rage, fury, and vindictiveness. We must stop covering up for racists, if a racist utters the word nigger  it`s incumbent on journalists to faithfully record his vile words as a testament that our great democracy is still bedeviled with racism.
