Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) Dead at 78

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Yvonne Craig, the actress best known as Batgirl on the hit 1960s television series Batman, died on Monday at her home in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She was 78.

Ms. Craig`s family said in a statement that she had breast cancer, which eventually metastasized to her liver, for more than two years, but that she had kept her condition private."

The New York Times

Yvonne Craig was a ballet dancer and actress who appeared in many TV shows in the 60`s and early 70`s, but of course she`s primarily known for playing Batgirl in the cult 1960s television series Batman.

Batgirl assisted the Caped Crusader in fighting dastardly criminals in Gotham City, and as her alter ego she was the mild-mannered librarian Barbara Gordon.

The 1960s may be remembered as the free love generation, but in the pre-Internet era pornography was only available in adult book stores and adult theatres. Batgirl in her skin-tight crime fighting outfit was as risqué as it got in that innocent age, and a certain 10-year-old horny boy fantasized that she would come fight the evildoers in his neighborhood.

Later on as a young man I lamented the sad fact that none of the librarians I knew looked as fantastic as Barbara Gordon.

Craig is also fondly remembered for playing Marta, a sexy-as-hell green-skinned slave girl in the Star Trek episode Whom Gods Destroy ", even the taciturn Mr. Spock found her "mildly interesting. "

Rest in Peace Batgirl, you shall be sorely missed!
