Bat-fetching Pooch Retires After 649 Games: Video

By Robert Paul Reyes

All dogs go to heaven, and while they are alive they bring a little bit of heaven down to us.

A ballpark is as close to heaven as we will ever get this side of the Great Divide, and it`s even more heavenly when a pooch is employed as the ballgirl.

Miss Babe Ruth, a black Labrador retriever has worked for the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers, living up to her breed`s namesake retrieving bats and balls.

After 649 consecutive home games working as a ballgirl, Babe finally called it quits, and she was honored at the ballpark with a lavish retirement ceremony.

Every dog has his day, and Miss Babe Ruth was the top dog on her retirement day.

Miss Babe Ruth`s brother is the black sheep of the family; he became the first pooch to be ejected from a professional baseball game in 2009 when he took a crap on the field during a between-inning promotion.

But Miss Babe Ruth didn`t sully her retirement ceremony by committing any indiscretions, and a great day was had at the old ballpark by one and all.
