Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis Again Refuses to Issue Same-sex Marriage Licenses

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A law clerk in Kentucky who refuses to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of her religious beliefs remained defiant Tuesday, despite the Supreme Court effectively cutting off her legal avenues the night before. But even though Davis is essentially refusing to do her job, she can`t exactly be fired.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who did not respond to requests for comment by TIME, was elected to her position in November 2014. On Tuesday, she denied marriage licenses to two same-sex couples, just as she has refused to issue licenses to straight or gay couples since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in June. The Supreme Court dismissed an emergency motion on Monday to grant a stay of an earlier district court decision that also ruled against her, leaving Davis with few legal paths forward."

Davis believes that the Bible teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that sex outside of marriage is a sin. This staunch believer in the sanctity of marriage has been divorced twice, but that doesn`t prevent her from pushing her own narrow definition of marriage on everyone else.

Davis is entitled to her religious views on marriage and morality, but when there`s a conflict between her personal religious views and the laws of the land, she must do the right thing and resign. If it goes against her religion to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, then common sense and fair play dictates that she quit her job.

The status quo is intolerable; Davis can`t be allowed to continue to  deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples. If she can`t be fired from her elected position, then she must be impeached and removed from office.

If the Kentucky General Assembly fails to impeach this contemptible woman, then the federal courts should step in, and fine her for each day she`s in violation.

As a society we simply can`t allow a religious Neanderthal to defy the law of the land, and finally I hope that the couples that she denied marriage licenses will sue her, and that she will be too busy with litigation to bother anybody else.
