Playmobil Pirate Ship Includes Black Slave! Harmless or Hurtful?

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Ida Lockett was happy for her son after he received a Playmobil pirate ship for his fifth birthday.

`He was excited when he got it,` she said.

And only after putting together the gift from his aunt did she see what her son was playing with.

The dark-skinned character with no shoes and tattered pants came with instructions to put some sort of neck piece on him."

The child didn`t receive a toy Good Ship Lollipop for his fifth birthday; he was given a Playmobil pirate ship. Pirates were gnarly dudes who committed reprehensible crimes like raiding ships, raping women, and selling their victims as slaves.

I don`t expect the Playmobil pirate ship to be awarded a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, but by the same token I don`t expect the NAACP to waste their time and resources protesting a harmless children`s toy.

If Lockett was so exercised over the toy slave, she should have simply thrown the slave away and let her son have fun playing with the Playmobile pirate ship.

How about a little bit of perspective, there are more egregious matters to protest!
