Donald Trump Is An Unstoppable Force
Donald Trump is anathema to Democrats, his nativism, racism and appeal to the lowest common denominator runs contrary to all their egalitarian principles.
Trump, who can best be described as a populist, is hated even more by the establishment wing of the Republican Party.
Reince Priebus and the Republican National Committee (RNC) hoped and prayed that the Trump phenomenon would eventually implode, but after witnessing the blowhard billionaire not only survive but thrive after uttering profanities and overtly racist and misogynist comments, they are now determined to destroy him by any means necessary.
The RNC is more bothered by Trump`s deviance from orthodox conservatism (his qualified support of Planned Parenthood, his often proclaimed belief that the Iraq War was a huge mistake, and his trashing of the Bush dynasty), than it is by his racist, nativist and misogynist comments.
After all the GOP has long relied on a southern strategy of gaining political support in the South by appealing to racism against blacks, every Republican candidate worth his salt keeps a dog whistle in his pocket.
Last night at the Republican debate in Greenville, South Carolina Trump was booed as soon as he opened his mouth, and his rivals who are languishing in the polls were wildly cheered. The master entertainer hasn`t lost his touch; the RNC packed the audience with donors, Bush groupies and other riff raff who despise him.
The viewing audience may have got the impression that the tide is turning against Trump, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Trump`s followers transcend political labels and I expect him to win huge in South Carolina, the blue collar Trump devotees identify more with the billionaire than they do with the slick establishment types the likes of Bush and Kasich.
Sure Trump was out of control, angry and flustered for most of the debate, but that was vintage Trump. Trump`s followers don`t dare if their hero was out of his depth, as long as they hear his diatribe against immigration and Muslims they are satisfied.
Of course the Republican debate last night was a free-for-all farce, but we live in a TV reality world, and Trump was once again the master of the stage.
