I`m a political junkie, and I was watching CNN when Wolf Blitzer broke the news that Prince died at the age of 57.
I was born in 1957, and the Holy Trinity of 80`s Pop (Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna) were born in 1957 or 1958, and they achieved their greatest success in the 80`s. These musical icons were the soundtrack of my life not only in the 80`s, but for most of my adult life. They are of my generation, and I felt like a piece of me died when Jackson died, and now Prince ...
I wish that a news anchor who knew something of the legacy and legend of Prince had delivered the devastating news. Blitzer is tailor-made for reading the political news of the day, he`s well-versed on the subject and I don`t mind a robotic delivery of political events.
But somebody with no soul, and no comprehension or knowledge of Prince`s incredible body of work, is the last person on Earth I wanted to inform me that the icon had passed away.
Blitzer confused Prince with another black musician who was a guitar virtuoso: All of us, of course, remember `Purple Haze` and what that did for the world of music, he said. I doubt Blitzer grooved to the music of Hendrix in the 60`s or jammed to Prince in the 80`s.
I don`t fault Blitzer, it was just his luck that he happened to be on the air when the news broke. Everything about Prince dying sucks, forgive me for taking out my frustration on the hapless Blitzer.
