Study: Dogs Prefer Praise Over Food

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Given the choice, many dogs prefer praise from their owners over food, suggests a new study published in the journal Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience. The study is one of the first to combine brain-imaging data with behavioral experiments to explore canine reward preferences."

I lavish my cats with hugs and kisses, but I never praise them -- they don`t  perform tricks or do anything worthy of praise. The only kind of praise my felines understand is a treat, a pinch of tuna fish or a bit of sliced ham.

I praise my pooch, Mandy, when she fetches a bone or when she restrains her impulse to attack the neighbor`s cat trespassing on our property. A "Good Girl" will get her tail wagging quicker than a hamburger patty I toss at her.

I don`t need egghead scientists to tell me that my doggie prefers praise over food, nevertheless it`s good to know that the pure spirit of dogs has been validated by science.

If you want a loyal companion who will love you for yourself and not for what you may give him, adopt a puppy from your local animal shelter.
