"A statement issued late Wednesday by the group Liberty United Against Trump strongly rebuked the candidate as well as the school`s president, Jerry Falwell Jr., for defending Trump after he made vulgar comments about women in a 2005 video.
With a scathing statement against `one of the worst presidential candidates in American history,` students at Liberty University joined a growing group of conservative college students who are making it clear that they don`t support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
`Donald Trump does not represent our values and we want nothing to do with him,` the statement said. ` " He has made his name by maligning others and bragging about his sins. Not only is Donald Trump a bad candidate for president, he is actively promoting the very things that we as Christians ought to oppose.`"
Jerry Falwell Jr.`s father must be turning over in his grave at the very idea of his son endorsing a vulgarian who is the antitheses of everything he advocated and preached about during his lifetime of Christian ministry.
Jerry Falwell, the founder of the Moral Majority, would have regarded the prospect of Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for President as proof that America`s moral decline was irreversible, and that Armageddon must be right around the corner.
Junior`s endorsement of Trump is a stain on Jerry Falwell`s legacy, and a craven political calculation that will do untold harm to Liberty University (LU).
I live in Lynchburg, and most residents resent LU because the Christian university and the city have become synonymous. I don`t subscribe to the right-wing conservative philosophy espoused by LU, but I always admired the institution for remaining faithful to their fundamentalist views in a secular world.
Now I have nothing but contempt for LU, the university is a disgrace to the City of Lynchburg, the evangelical community, and America.
Kudos to the group "Liberty United Against Trump" for speaking out against the school`s president, and attempting to save the school`s reputation.
As a resident of Lynchburg, I want to make it abundantly clear that Jerry Falwell Jr.`s endorsement of Donald Trump is anathema to many of the LU students, and to many of the residents of Lynchburg.
Even in the buckle of the Bible Belt, many of use recognize Trump as a vulgarian whose behavior and ideology are anathema to the ideals of our great democracy.
