Memorial Day: Remember their Sacrifice

Memorial Day: Remember their Sacrifice

By Philip Lawrence

In 1776 our forefathers drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence, breaking our bonds from King George III of England.  Eleven years later, the Constitution of the United States was drafted by many of those same men and ratified by the states during the following two years.

A revolutionary war was fought and since then more than 1,200,000 brave Americans have given their lives to ensure that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are  living documents and not simply lofty words on meaningless pieces of paper.

Now, more than two centuries later that government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from the earth.  And the reason we have not perished from the earth is simply this: in our nation`s long history, we never seem to run out of selfless and courageous young men and women like those who have given and continue to give their lives in our nation`s defense.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember their sacrifice and the sacrifices of those who have gone before them.
