Judyth Piazza chats with Dr. Jo Boaler, Author of What`s Math Got to Do With It?

By Judyth Piazza CEO (Editor)

JO BOALER is the author of What`s Math Got to Do With It?  A former professor at Stanford University and a lecturer at King`s College, London, she is currently the Marie Curie Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Sussex in England. She is a regular contributor to media in both the US and UK, and her research has appeared in newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and The Times (London).

What`s Math Got to Do With It?

According to professor and author Jo Boaler ?.. everything!  In many of our everyday tasks math plays an obvious role, and sometimes a not so obvious one " for example did you know we use the golden ratio to determine someone`s attractiveness?  And although pop culture has been known to stereotype math enthusiasts as socially challenged nerds, the mainstream has made math infinitely cooler with movies like 21 ? and the hit tv show Numb3rs. ?

Why then, do we still cringe every time someone brings up math?  Maybe it`s because we were traumatized in the classroom or maybe we`re too afraid to admit we secretly love crunching numbers, but one thing is certain:  we need to get over our math-phobia.

Boaler argues that without interest and success in the classrooms, we face a crisis in the US as the future of science, security and technology will be threatened. ?  Leaders in these industries have already begun preparing for a shortage of qualified workers.  With a little understanding Boaler hopes that we can learn to love our most hated subject and discover why it`s important for America that we all find the math geek within ourselves.
