Judyth Piazza chats with Joseph Cammarata, Author of Face of Courage: Rise from the Rubble
Face of Courage remembers author`s brother, mother
On Sept. 11, 2001, New York City police officer Joseph Cammarata`s life was torn apart as he watched the South Tower of the burning World Trade Center collapse. He knew it had just fallen on top of his brother, brand-new FDNY firefighter Michael Cammarata.
Two years earlier, his mother, Linda Cammarata, had beaten breast cancer. In 2009, years after taking up smoking again to assuage her grief after the terrorist attack, lung cancer would take her life.
Cammarata`s new book, Face of Courage: Rise from the Rubble, describes his descent to rock bottom after his brother`s death and the toll it took on his mother, who slipped into emotional rigor mortis, " he says.
Cammarata describes his mother as a strong matriarch who was changed forever after she lost her son. Linda had quit smoking when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but after 9/11 she took up the habit again as a way to keep calm, she said. She later developed lung cancer, which spread throughout her body and ultimately into her brain. The family fought the disease together before Linda eventually passed away in February of 2009 at the age of 60.
Face of Courage fulfills one promise that Cammarata made to his mother: to keep Michael`s spirit alive. The other promise was to go to law school.
My mother told me I could do anything I set out to do. Nothing will ever stand in my way of fulfilling my promises to her, " says Cammarata.
Cammarata is donating $1 from every copy of Face of Courage sold to the American Cancer Society in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
