Newsflash: Rick Astley Named Best Act Ever
Who was named the Best Act Ever at the MTV Europe Music Awards? The Beatles? Rolling Stones? Bob Dylan? U2? Michael Jackson? Frank Sinatra? Duke Ellington? Madonna? What the hell, ABBA?
You aren`t being punked when I tell you that the winner was none other than Rick Astley. Those of us of a certain age remember Astley`s videos as the epitome of cool, while the younger set treasure his videos as the epitome of kitsch.
"The 42-year-old Englishman received 100 million votes - more than all the night`s other winners combined - to take the title ahead of international stars such as U2, Britney Spears and The Beatles.
Astley`s career has enjoyed an unlikely revival in recent years thanks to an internet trend known as Rickrolling, in which people are tricked into watching his videos by clicking on more enticingly-labelled links.
His 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up now been watched more than 20 million times on YouTube, winning over a new generation of fans who have now handed him MTV glory."
This is truly the greatest Rickroll of all time; I`m sure Astley will receive his award with good humor. The Rickroll phenomenon has revived Astley`s career, and he`s probably thrilled by the publicity this latest honor will bring him.
What possessed me to write this article, now I can`t get his "Never Gonna Give You Up" video out of my mind.
