You Can Be Ticketed For Being Annoying?

You Can Be Ticketed For Being Annoying?

By Robert Paul Reyes

Ticking someone off could get you a ticket in one Michigan city. The Brighton City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance allowing police in the Livingston County community to ticket and fine anyone who is annoying in public "by word of mouth, sign or motions."

I think this law is horrible, it`s giving the police too much power, namely the capacity to wreck a person`s life.

If I get slapped with a ticket for jaywalking it might ruin my day, but it won`t trigger a bout with depression. If a cop ticketed me for being annoying, it would devastate my psyche and it might land me in a mental institution. There are a lot of folks with fragile egos and to be branded as an "annoying person" by an authority figure might be the straw that breaks the camel`s back.

I am going to avoid Brighton City like the plague until this horrendous law is repealed. I would be afraid to even drive in Brighton City, many people think that I`m an annoying driver because I refuse to exceed the posted speed limit.

Annoying behavior is in the eye of the beholder, what`s annoying behavior to one person might be charming to another. A woman might think that a panytless Paris Hilton dancing on top of a table is annoying to the extreme, while I might find it cute and charming.

One cop might ticket a pedestrian for humming "Feelings" while another one might ticket someone using his cell phone in a crowded store. Eventually everybody in Brighton City will be ticketed for one reason or another.

Thank goodness that there is no law banning annoying editorials, there are plenty of folks who turn in any columnist who mentions the pop diva.
