Texas Road Sign: Zombies Ahead

Texas Road Sign: Zombies Ahead

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead.",2933,484326,00.html

This is an amusing prank, and there were no accidents caused by commuters freaking out at the prospect of zombies dead ahead.

Only a gamer who spends all his time killing zombies might panic upon seeing a "Zombies Ahead" sign.

But it`s scary to think that it`s relatively easy for a prankster to change the message on a digital road sign. Sometimes those road signs display critical messages warning drivers of dangerous road conditions, and if one of those messages is altered it can result in injuries or death.

Tampering with road signs is only a misdemeanor is most states, municipalities should seriously consider raising it to a felony. At the very least those signs should be made tamper-proof.

If the sign had been changed to read "UFOs Ahead" it would have caused more than a few accidents. I have recently written a series of articles ridiculing belief in UFOs, and I have been astonished by how many emails I have received by otherwise intelligent individuals expressing a belief that extraterrestrials frequently visit our planet.
