Help Old Lady Cross The Street At Your Peril

By Robert Paul Reyes

File this article under "No good deed goes unpunished":

"A good Samaritan who helped push three people out of the path of a pickup truck before being struck and injured has gotten a strange reward for his good deed: A jaywalking ticket.

Family members said 58-year-old bus driver Jim Moffett and another man were helping two elderly women cross a busy Denver street in a snowstorm when he was hit Friday night." The Associated Press

The bad guy in this incident isn`t the cop who gave the good Samaritan a ticket, but the two old ladies who jaywalked across a busy street in a snowstorm.

The elderly think that traffic laws don`t apply to them, they drive twenty miles under the speed limit. They cross the street anywhere, and expect that traffic will automatically stop for them. They don`t fear a semi barreling toward them as they jaywalk, they think they`re impervious to the laws of physics.

Jim Moffett may be a kind and caring man, but he`s also an idiot. If you help a couple of old ladies jaywallk across the street, don`t complain when you end up in the hospital with bleeding in the brain, a dislocated shoulder and a possible ruptured spleen.

If I see two old birds jaywalking in a blinding snowstorm, I won`t help them cross the street. I will seek cover so I won`t be hit in by an old lady who`s been sent airborne by a speeding truck.
