"No-Hitchhiker" Signs A Sign Of The Past

"No-Hitchhiker" Signs A Sign Of The Past

By Robert Paul Reyes

"JACKSON, Mich. - Jackson County officials say signs warning motorists not to pick up hitchhikers give the wrong impression about the area, which is home to some state prisons.

The county Board of Commissioners called Tuesday for the Michigan Department of Transportation to remove the signs, which were posted in the early 1980s.

Sheriff Dan Heyns says: `Let`s roll out a welcome mat instead of signs that scare the heck out of people.`" The Associated Press

I haven`t seen a hitchhiker or a sign warning motorists not to pick up hitchhikers in years. Anybody with at least two brain cells knows it`s not a very good idea to pick up a hitchhiker. I`ve seen enough horror flicks to know that picking up a stranger by the side of a road makes about as much sense as playing Russian Roulette.

The county Board of Commissioners made the right call by ordering that the signs be removed. If I drove through a town with one of those warning signs, I would immediately lock my car doors. I wouldn`t want to end up like a hapless victim in Deliverance.

"Don`t pick up hitchhikers" signs are a remnant of a bygone era, people today are too cynical, smart and afraid to pick up any hitchhiker. Even if Mother Teresa had her thumb up, I would run her over sooner than picking her up. Of course, you can`t hurt a ghost by running it over.
