Clueless Cleaners Paint Over Priceless Graffiti Art

By Robert Paul Reyes

"An Australian council is rueing a decision to send street cleaners into a Melbourne lane after they painted over a priceless stencil of a rat by the celebrated British graffiti artist Banksy.

graffitiMelbourne Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley last week sent a clean-up team into Hosier Lane, renowned internationally for its colorful street art, to clean up garbage in the graffiti-lined passage after local residents complained." Reuters

I was born and raised in the San Francisco, and I learned to appreciate the beauty of the many murals and works of graffiti gracing the buildings and other structures in the City by the Bay.

But graffiti is vulnerable to the elements, vandals, and philistines who don`t have an appreciation for street art.

But in this case it was clueless cleaners who unwittingly painted over a priceless stencil of a rat by a gifted graffiti artist Bansky. A London wall bearing one of his works of art was sold on eBay for thousands of dollars.

Art doesn`t just hang on walls of prestigious museums, sometimes it can be found on the walls of tenements. We need to learn to appreciate art wherever it is found.
