How To Avoid Date Rape

How To Avoid Date Rape

By Peter Giordano

Date rape drugs are among the most harmful drugs used by college students today.  Many serious consequences can occur when a person is slipped on of these drugs.  Going to a party, many students are thinking about just having a good time, rather than thinking of their safety.  People are not aware of the dangers that can happen when these drugs are taken.  The best way to deal with handling these drugs is to have programs that teach high school and college students how to look for signs of date rape drugs.

Even though the drugs are very popular, there are a few that are very well known to many students.  The two used most often are Rohypnol and GHB.  A third lesser-used drug is called Ketamine Hydrochloride.  Many people refer to these drugs as club drugs because they are used in many fraternities and at many clubs.  Both drugs are odorless and colorless, and can be slipped into an unsuspecting victim`s drink.  The high it produces usually lasts from 2-8 hours and its victims have no memory of the events that happen during that time.  Ketamine is one date rape drug that is not used as often during big parties.  When being used, it is slipped into a drink, and the victim will have no idea what is happening to them.

Two of the drugs that are much more popular is Gamma-hydroxloutrate, or GHB and Rohyponol.  GHB is nearly impossible to detect when slipped into your drink.  GHB is not tolerated in the United States; the FDA has even forbidden it from over-the-counter sale.  Another harmful drug is called Rohypnol.  According to parentingteens.com, Rohypnol is said to be ten times stronger than Valium.  Rohyponol has many different side effects.  According to The Realities of Date Rape,  it causes muscle relaxation, sleepiness, dizziness, hot or cold feelings, nausea, trouble speaking or moving, drop in blood pressure, or vision problems. "

Many statistics show that the rapists are often familiar with their victims.  The, Abuse and Incest National Network stated that approximately 68% of the victims knew their attackers.  And one statistic estimated that between fifteen and twenty-five percent of college women have experienced date or acquaintance rape.  Particular groups of students are being stereotyped for date raping innocent girls at their college parties.  Certain types of girls are also at a higher risk for being the victims.  The Realities of Date Rape also reported that Fraternity members are portrayed as users and abusers of alcohol and drug and live in an environment that encourages sexual victimization in women.  Sorority members are portrayed to be at greater risk of being a victim as well as having more accepting beliefs about sexual coercion. "

The women that are attending these parties need to be aware of their surroundings at all times.  There are vital signs that show warnings of date rape drugs being used at a party.  Because date rape does not fit the stranger-in-a-dark-alley stereotype, people are likely not to recognize it as rape and are likely to blame the woman for sexually arousing the man.

There are many ways that you can take to prevent yourself from being a victim of date rape: Keep your eyes and ears open, never leave your drink unattended and while at clubs get your drink directly from the bartender, not a waitress.  If you still do not feel comfortable with taking these precautions, there are testing strips that you can buy to put in your drink.  They will tell you if there is any type of drug in your alcoholic drink.  Drink Safe Technology " is actually a package of drink testing strips or coasters that work like those litmus papers you use in chemistry class.  The litmus strips will change color when they come in contact with a date rape drug.

Knowledge is the power to helping yourself stay safe from becoming a victim of date rape drugs.  Make sure you are always keeping an eye on your drink, and never leave it unattended.  Also, become as educated as you can on how to keep yourself protected from rapists.  If you follow these steps, you will be able to recognize the signs of someone who is a potential date rapist.

Also, become as educated as you can on how to keep yourself protected from rapists. You may even want to consider taking your education of rape prevention to the next level by earning a criminology masters degree.
