Assessing The Bio-Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Aruis Heudelotii Fish Species

This project entitled Assessing the bio- accumulation of heavy metals in Aruis heudeloti fish species " from the Naval Base of River Wouri, Douala- Cameroon, is the original work of Zoneziwoh from the Department of Geology and environmental sciences, university of Buea.
I am most thankful to my supervisor Dr. Fonge, who assisted me in the realization of this project by sacrificing her time and diligently supervising this work.

Elevated levels of heavy metals in arius heudeloti can be a good indication of pollution of an aquatic ecosystem due to anthropogenic influence. For the eight weeks collection of live caught arius fish species, the weight (g) and length (cm) of the fish collected ranged from 150g to 210g while the full length ranged from 27cm to 28cm and the standard length ranged between 22cm to 24cm. the distribution of the metals in the fish was of order phosphorus > iron >mercury > zinc >magnesium > calcium > lead, while chromium and cadmium were absent. This accumulation was found to be time-dependent. The highest level of phosphorus was in the gut (2913.3 ppm) during the second week, iron concentration (245 ppm) at the final sampling was highest in the liver, likewise that of mercury (28.2 ppm).
Besides mercury, there was no consistent trend in the pa. term of accumulation of these elements in the fish and we attributed this to specific dynamics in the accumulation and metabolism of different metals.
The results also revealed potential health hazards resulting from the consumption of fish exposed to high levels of toxic metals, as well as environmental hazards emanating from high levels of nutrients indicative of eutrophication.
