Grammy Awards--a hit or miss?

Grammy Awards--a hit or miss?

By

The animated musical group opened the 48th Annual Grammy Awards last night in Los Angeles with their hit Feel Good Inc. "  Bursting mid-way through was D4L with Laffy Taffy ", making way for one of the many award show`s high-lights, the Queen Of Pop.  Madonna, looking as glamorous and fit as ever in feathered blonde hair and lavender leotard, took to the stage and performed her underplayed but club hit, Hung Up ".  The first presenters then appeared, as Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder did an awkward batter before singing an acapella verse of Wonder`s classic, Higher Ground " in honor of Coretta King Scott and victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Then, an overjoyed and shocked Kelly Clarkson accepted the award for Best Female Vocal Performance, where she conveniently forgot her roots of American Idol, thanking her fans and those who worked on her second album.

The animated musical group opened the 48 Annual Grammy Awards last night in Los Angeles with their hit Feel Good Inc.

Coldplay was anti-glamor as they performed, finding Chris Martin going into the audience.  John Legend began his simple and subdued song, Ordinary People " in black and white, followed by a more energetic Sugarland, who unfortunately was plagued by audio problems in the beginning.  Best Country Album was awarded to Alyson Krauss and The Union Station.

U2, one of the best rock bands of our time, began their song Vertigo ", to be followed by an inspired duet with Mary J. Blige of their staple hit, One ".  Matt Dillon and Ludacris presented Best Rap Album to Late Registration by arrogant Kanye West, whose joke of having no idea of winning and then pulling out a "Thank You List` didn`t go over as planned.  Kelly Clarkson took to the stage singing her repressed ballad Because Of You ", finding her voice breaking towards the end.  Best Rock Album went to U2`s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

Ellen DeGeneres came on briefly to state this next artist needs no introduction " and walked off, as her words proved true; Paul McCartney started with Fine Line " and rocked out to Helter Skelter " in, amazingly, his first Grammy performance ever.  A small Kids Incorporated reunion took place with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Fergie, along with the rest of the Black Eyed Peas, who presented John Legend with Best Male R&B performance; his speech was the first to be cut short by the music.  Mariah Carey, dressed in true diva fashion with a floor length, classy gown and holding a glittered mic, sang her welcome-back hit We Belong Together ", and part of the inspired Fly Like A Bird ", complete with a choir.

A sheer dressed Teri Hatcher and Michael Bublè awarded Kelly Clarkson her second trophy of the night for Best Pop Vocal Album.  Clarkson was able to keep her emotions in check this time as she did a shout-out to her own idol, Bonnie Raitt.  Keith Urban and Faith Hill shared the stage for each of their ear-friendly country songs, followed by Jay-Z and Linkin Park`s win for Best Rap Song Collaboration.  The elusive Dave Chappelle introduced the all-star tribute to Sly and The Family Stone; performers included Joss Stone, John Legend, Fantasia, Ciara with Maroon 5, Will.i.am, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.  Sly Stone himself joined them all for bit, sporting a blonde Mohawk, before walking off on his own tribute.

If that spectacle wasn`t impressive enough, the next certainly was: Jay-Z rapped in a white suit and seemingly odd John Lennon t-shirt with Linkin Park.  Their winning song, Numb/Encore " transitioned into Yesterday ", where Paul McCartney, making up for lost time, came and treated all to the Beatles` classic.  The screen behind them flashed several images, ending with Coretta Scott King.  The legends continued as Bruce Springsteen sang his stripped down Devils And Dust ", ending with the message to President Bush regarding our troops, to "bring "em home`.  Perhaps for the last time, Destiny`s Child appeared on the Grammy stage to give U2 their Song Of The Year Grammy for Sometimes You Can`t Make It On Your Own ".  Once the confusion of Mariah`s We Belong Together " being mistakenly played as they went to accept was over, Bono dedicated the win to his father.

Another wonderful performance was courteousy of Kanye West and Jamie Foxx with Gold Digger ".  Both in band leader costumes, the presentation staged a rivalry between colleges, complete with marching bands, female steppers in gold hot-pants and male fraternity "Broke Phi Broke`.  Record Of The Year went to Green Day`s Boulevard Of Broken Dreams ".  Christina Aguilera proved marriage agrees with her as she appeared with Herbie Hancock in a 1940`s style hair and dress, before massacring the ballad Song For You " in her over-vocalizing ways.  Best New Artist went to John Legend.  The memoriam clip of those who passed included Luther Vandross, Lou Rawls, Wilson Pickett, and Richard Pryor.  Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor presented the last award, Album Of The Year to U2 for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.  The night ended with another all-star tribute to New Orleans; performers included Raitt, Yolanda Adams, the Edge from U2, Elvis Costello, and Bruce Springsteen.

Despite having the most nominations, Mariah Carey won only 3 trophies in the categories of Best R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.  U2 came out the big winners with a total of 5 wins.
