Comedy Giant George Carlin Dead At 71

Comedy Giant George Carlin Dead At 71

By Robert Paul Reyes

"George Carlin, the dean of counterculture comedians whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday. He was 71."

Quotation from the Associated Press

Lenny Bruce: There`s nothing sadder than an aging hipster.

Comic George Carlin was the exception to this maxim. At 71, he was cooler than most 17 year old kids. Carlin never lost his wit, edginess or coolness factor-- he was an evergreen hipster.

Like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, Carlin pushed the envelope while tickling our funny bone. Many stand-up comics think they are imitating these giants of comedy by spewing vulgarities and four-letter words, but they are lacking in wit and imagination-- crucial ingredients in comedy.

Carlin was labeled a counter-culture comic, but he was a staple on TV for decades. His comedy transcended generations and politics-- teens as well as grannies laughed at his irreverent humor. He made almost 2 dozen comedy albums, for which he won 4 Grammy awards, and was featured in over a dozen HBC comedy specials. But Carlin was not just a brilliant stand-up comedian. He also wrote 5 books of his sardonic humor, and appeared in several movies and TV shows (such as Bill and Ted`s Excellent Adventure, Dogma, Prince of Tides, and Jersey Girl; as well as children`s program Shining Time Station).

In 2001, Carlin was given a Lifetime Achievement Award. Shortly before his death, the Kennedy Center For the Performing Arts revealed that George Carlin would be an honoree of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor later in 2008.

Carlin hated pretentiousness and I won`t eulogize him with fancy words:

Sh**, we will Fu**** miss you George, you were the most Fu**** funny comic in the whole M*********** world, and there will never be another entertainer like you.
