Vestige of the Vox Populi #100

Vestige of the Vox Populi #100

By Sean Stubblefield

According to "legend", The Lost Sport of Olympia is a blindfolded sport that was played and then banned by the ancient Greeks, who inexplicably attempted to destroy all evidence that the game ever existed. The game was completely forgotten by history-- until 2008.

It`s a blindfolded team sport, with 1 runner and 10-100 teammates who form a malleable human labyrinth around the runner-- who cannot see where he or she is going! And they can`t use their hands to feel their way, being directed by the humming of the literally Man-made wall. So they must navigate a labyrinth pattern with only the sound of the walls humming to guide them, as they seek to reach the end of the trail as fast as possible without knocking the wall down!
As the runner proceeds, the wall-people run ahead of the runner to build the wall as they go, keeping him or her penned in at all times. It`s total collaboration, as the walls and the runner are on the same team. Atypical of Olympic games, you don`t need strength, agility or endurance... but concentration, teamwork and a courage to trust blindly.

Perhaps a demonstration is in order...

A fictional narrative-- with intriguingly fun webisodes and podcasts-- has been created around this concept, as an alternate reality adventure game/ mythology designed for the 2008 Summer Olympics (in partnership with McDonalds?!), to encourage group collaboration for social immersion.
