Atlanta Celebrates Mother's Day 2009

Atlanta Celebrates Mother's Day 2009

By S Renee Greene

Whether Mom is wild and carefree, reserved and refined, a regular Georgia peach, or just a jewel (rock) of a Mom, there`s plenty for her on that special Sunday. Keep this list in mind for Mother`s Day and put your wallet away "at least until dinner time.

The Moms-don`t-Crack " Mom

Age is Beauty Festival If Mom has a slight wild streak, she can get her groove on at Belly Dance lessons the day before Mother`s day at no charge. It`s a good way to warm her up for the wild breakfast in bed you`re going to make for her on Sunday morning. Mom also gets a free 8x10 photo if she`s at least 60 years young (http://www.myspace.com/s_sobad).

Culture Mom

Sweet Auburn Springfest 2 Celebrating the history, heritage and achievements of African-Americans, the annual multicultural festival, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, is located near the Civil Rights "Walk of Fame.` It is known for the three F`s: Family, food and fairs. The theme for 2009 is Linking the Global Family" and will include a Business and Technology Expo and a car and bike show (http://www.sweetauburn.com/).

Outdoor Mom

Gem & Mineral Show What do malachite, lapis cabochon and barite have in common, besides being precious and semiprecious stones, fossils or rock? They`re all going to show up at the Gem & Mineral Show at the Cobb County Civic Center. Mom`s a jewel; so take her there for Mother`s Day. It`s on the house (http://www.gamineral.org/may-show.htm).

Jazzy Mom

Atlanta Jazz Festival, Atlanta At the JazzFest, billed as the "nation`s largest free jazz festival," Mother`s Day lasts all month long (http://www.atlantafestivals.com/).

Park Mom

Semi-free: Lasershow, Georgia`s Stone Mountain Park Watch the sky explode into a rainbow over the north face of the Mountain. Free with admission to the park, but Mom`s not paying. Right? (http://festivals.stonemountainpark.com/mini-section).

Museum Mom

It`s Free Admission Day at Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and the Smith Plantation where Mom can be a home-touring philanthropist on Mother`s Day 2009. It`s Open House at the three antebellum homes, which will also collect food donations for the North Fulton Food Bank the same day (http://www.roswellgov.com/index.php?p=379).

Classic Shopaholic Mom

Atlantic Station: Where you don`t spend a dime unless you just want to. Great place to unwind and window shop with no pressure (http://www.atlanticstation.org).

History Buff Mom

If Mom is a history buff who is up for celebrating Her Day the Thursday or Friday before May 10, she can take a gander at some cold hard cash at the Federal Reserve Bank (http://www.frbatlanta.org) or make a quick stop at the Georgia Governor`s Mansion (http://mansion.georgia.gov). The tours are free, or self-guided if she prefers. The Governor`s Mansion tour is also available online. (Tip: She can get free recipes from the governor`s own personal chef online, too.) Also, the Historic Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place for nearly 7,000 Civil War soldiers, as well as Gone with the Wind " author Margaret Mitchell (http://www.oaklandcemetery.com).
