After Talent Show Loss, Susan Boyle Is Hospitalized
"Talent show contestant Susan Boyle`s giddying rise from unemployed Scottish church volunteer to global superstar has come at a price, in what is being seen as a cautionary tale for the celebrity age.
On the way up, the 48-year-old`s performance last month of `I Dreamed a Dream` on television series `Britain`s Got Talent` was downloaded nearly 200 million times on the Internet, and within days Boyle was headline news around the world.
But as the pressure built ahead of Saturday`s final, which Boyle had been runaway favorite to win, she was reduced to tears, threw a tantrum and threatened to pull out of the show." Mike Collett-WhiteReuters
When I saw Boyle`s performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" the first time, I was reduced to tears, and it still touches my heart after watching it for the upteenth time.
When the frumpy middleaged woman with the disheveled hair and the quirky personality walked on the stage of Britain`s hit show, she was an object of pity and ridicule. But at the end of Boyle`s inspirational rendition of the show tune, she had won over the audience.
In a matter of just a few weeks the dowdy spinster became one of the most famous people in the world. Boyle was ill-prepared to deal with her massive popularity -- before the finale of "Britain`s Got Talent" she had a couple of epic breakdowns where she cursed like a sailor at people demanding her attention.
Boyle lost in the finale to the dance troupe Diversity, and her world came crushing down around her. Perhaps it was inevitable that Boyle ended up in a hospital suffering from mental exhaustion.
When Boyle is released from the hospital the press should give her some breathing room, and let her recuperate at home with her cat. Boyle isn`t cut out to be a celebrity who hits the talk-show circuit and goes and goes to clubs. But girlfriend can sing, and I hope she releases an album. I wish her all the success in the world!
