Was Mayor Wrong To Lower Flag To Half-Staff In Honor Of Michael Jackson?

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Mayor Jim Dear ordered the American flag outside City Hall lowered to half-staff the day of the pop singer`s funeral. He later reversed his decision." http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-michael-jackson-flag7-2009aug07,0,5084332.story

Mayor Jim Dear of Carson, a working class city in California, reversed his decision because of a few emails condemning his symbolic homage to the King of Pop.

Flags are flown at half-staff to honor dead politicians, but very few politicians are worthy of the honor. If my congressperson or senator dies, it doesn`t mean that much to me. But Michael Jackson`s music touched me and millions others in a very personal way. Every city, town and village in this great country of ours should have lowered their flags to half staff out of respect to the King of Pop.

Almost all of the emails that Mayor Dear received weren`t from residents of Carson. A decade ago nobody outside of Carson would have taken notice of the mayor`s action, but in the age of the Internet a local story can go viral in a nano second.

Mayor Dear may have reversed his decision, but I bet that hundreds of citizens in his town are paying homage to the King of Pop by playing his music.
