Mariachis Set World Record In Mexican City

Mariachis Set World Record In Mexican City

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Guadalajara, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, on Sunday entered the Guinness Book of World Records for having the world`s biggest mariachi band.

A total of 549 musicians played for just over ten minutes in the square in front of the Cabanas Cultural Institute in Guadalajara, the birthplace of the distinctive mariachi music style.

They closed with traditional mariachi favorites, `Cielito Lindo` and` `Guadalajara.`"

Mariachi bands are synonymous with good times -- if the beer is freely flowing and the dance floor is jumping chances are pretty good that mariachi musicians are playing.

Mariachi bands are often hired for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations. As soon as the men in silver-studded charro outfits walk into the room everyone smiles.

Some of the Guinness Book world records are silly or dangerous, but this is a wonderful achievement. I wish I could have been in Guadalajara when the record was set, drinking a Corona beer and dancing with a senorita.

Ay, ay, ay, ay
Canta y no llores
Porque cantando se alegran
Cielito lindo, los corazones
