"A massive earthquake has hit the coast of Chile, killing dozens of people, flattening buildings and triggering a tsunami.
The 8.8-magnitude quake, the country`s largest in 25 years, shook the capital Santiago for a minute and half at 3:34am (6:34am GMT) today." Read More
Elliott Yamin came frighteningly close to the 8.3 magnitude earthquake that struck central Chile on early Saturday. I pray that Americans will open their hearts and their wallets the same way they did after the earthquake that devastated Haiti. Chile isn`t an impoverished nation like Haiti, but the South American nation can`t handle a catastrophe of this magnitude without the help of the rest of the world.
As an entertainment columnist the tidbit about Elliott Yamin surviving the Chile earthquake caught my eye. I don`t mean to suggest that news about a celeb trumps the suffering of thousands of people left homeless and destitute after the earthquake, but my readers expect me to cover all entertainment-related subjects.
There`s a place in the blogoshphere for reporters who cover serious news items, as well as for writers who cover the Hollywood beat. In a world full of misery and bad news, bloggers who write about silly celebs perform a public service by helping us forget our troubles -- if only for a little while.
Not every American Idol contestant becomes a superstar like Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood, some American Idol Top Ten finishers end up performing in cruise ships or at a music festival in Chile.
I`m glad that Yamin wasn`t injured, but I can`t help poking fun at him. After his American Idol success Yamin never imagined that one day he would be singing "Rock Around the Clock" at a music festival in Chile.
I hope that the world responds and helps in the relief efforts in Chile, and I pray that Yamin`s fortunes will improve.
