Store Owner's Unique Plan To Stop Littering

Store Owner's Unique Plan To Stop Littering

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A shopkeeper has taken action to stop her customers littering by writing their names on the drink cans, crisp bags and chocolate bar wrappers they buy.

Then she slaps a temporary ban on any customer whose name turns up on a piece of rubbish found in the street.

Repeat offenders are told they will be banned for good unless they carry out some unpaid community punishment - usually clearing up litter."

The shopkeeper, Yvonne Froud, is teaching her customers that no man is an island, and that even our minor peccadilloes and infractions affect the community at large. Her young customers are learning to take responsibility for their misdeeds.

Froud is quite a lady, she runs the local post office, and she keeps the customers in her shop in line. She`s a shopkeeper, a postmistress and a defacto teacher.

This brilliant scheme applies only to Froud`s child customers, but many adults are litterbugs and they should be treated like children.

There has been a noticeable drop in littering in Froud`s small community. Her plan is effective because she lives in a very small town, where everyone knows each other.

I wish someone would come up with a scheme to shame litterbugs who live in major cities.
