Priest Excommunicates MD For Giving 9-Year-Old Girl Pregnant With Twins An Abortion

By Robert Paul Reyes

A nine-year old Brazilian girl is pregnant with twins after being raped by her stepfather. Allowing the pregnancy to proceed would endanger the life of the little girl.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil, however a physician is allowed to perform an abortion if the mother`s life is at risk or if the baby has no chance of survival.

What is the correct course of action, keeping in mind that forcing the girl to bring the babies to term might result in her tiny womb bursting? Only a sociopath or an insane person would argue that the child should forego an abortion.

"Father Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, Archbishop for the Recife region where the abortion was performed, has excommunicated those involved in the procedure, including the girl`s mother and the hospital staff who performed it.

"God`s law is above any human law. So when a human law ... is contrary to God`s law, this human law has no value," Cardoso said."

This is the sort of insanity that regularly occurs when a church is allowed to have inordinate amount of power over a society. Abortion is a medical procedure, and theologians shouldn`t have any say on the subject. If a young girl is pregnant she should consult her doctor for medical advice, and if a priest attempts to influence her decision, she should tell him to go to hell.

Father Cardoso is placing the teachings of his church ahead of the welfare of the young girl. The Bible is silent on the subject of abortion, it`s men and not the "Word of God" that teaches that abortion is a sin.

There are a gazillion and one religions, each one with its own version of "God`s Word", if we allow religions to interfere in a medical decision it will lead to chaos.

If we allow Roe v Wade to be overturned or weakened, there will be pregnant 9-year-old girls in this country who will be forced to bring their babies to term.
