Obama Lifts Restrictions On Federal Funding Of Stem Cell Research
"President Barack Obama lifted restrictions on federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research on Monday, angering abortion opponents but cheering those who believe the study could produce treatments for many diseases.
`We will lift the ban on federal funding for promising embryonic stem cell research,` Obama said to vigorous applause at a White House gathering.
"We will also vigorously support scientists who pursue this research. And we will aim for America to lead the world in the discoveries it one day may yield.`" Reuters
Catholics and evangelicals oppose embryonic stem cell research because it involves destruction of embryos, which they view as human life. These religious conservatives were able to persuade the Bush administration to place draconian restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research.
As a result America has fallen behind in this critical field of research, and it will take years for us to catch up now that the restrictions have been lifted.
The European nations held us in contempt because we allowed religion to interfere with medicine and science. We must be always on guard against the religious extremists - never again must we let them wield so much power.
The beneficiaries of Obama`s action are those who are suffering from Parkinson`s and other debilitating diseases. Thank God that medical science is no longer being held hostage by religious extremists.
I commend President Obama for his wise action, this is a good day for science, America and for millions who are suffering from debilitating diseases.
