Official Visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Yang Jiechi to the Russian Federation

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Yang Jiechi, paid an official visit to the Russian Federation from July 12 to 15, 2007.

In the course of the visit the Chinese Minister held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. Yang Jiechi was received by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and had a meeting with St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko

During the talks between Lavrov and Yang, held in the spirit of partnership and strategic engagement, the two discussed topical issues in bilateral relations, examined a schedule for upcoming summit and high-level contacts in the second part of this year, and profoundly analyzed the development of bilateral ties in the light of the practical tasks set by Presidents Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation and Hu Jintao of the PRC. The sides exchanged views on a number of urgent world and regional problems, including strategic stability maintenance in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world, the situation around the Korean Peninsula nuclear problem, the nuclear problem of Iran, and the problems of Kosovo and Middle East settlement. Agreement was reached on the further strengthening of bilateral cooperation within the UN, SCO and other international organizations.

The ministers signed a Protocol amending the Additional Protocol to the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Establishment and Organizational Principles of the Mechanism of Regular Meetings between the Heads of the Governments of Russia and China, of June 27, 1997.
