A Student's Perspective: My Internship with The SOP

A Student's Perspective: My Internship with The SOP

By LaShelle Turner

When I say my internship with The Student Operated Press has been a life-changing experience, please believe me.

The Student Operated Press opened up to me the world of 21st century journalism. So much goes into writing a story. It is more than just sitting in front of a computer and filling the screen with words. Even today, words are still the most powerful form of communication.

I learned that all journalists have a responsibility to their readers. It is more than just about grabbing a great headline or increasing website traffic. It is also about educating the public and making readers take the time to really gain an understanding of what is going on outside their four walls. A missing girl is not just a pretty picture next to an article; she is a daughter, a sister. She is one of us. Journalism brings us together. Like it or not, each story reflects the world in which we live. That is what makes being a journalist a wonderful and fulfilling career. Journalists have the ability to give as well to be a powerful voice for society.

The best part of my internship with the SOP was getting feedback on my work from readers across the country. It is great to know that someone took the time out of his or her busy life to respond and offer feedback to something that I have written-- it is the best feeling in the world.

Judyth Piazza is a wonderful mentor and I appreciate all the opportunities she has given me this semester. She takes the time to give us real world experience beyond the textbook and classroom. Each assignment taught me to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself as a writer. With each assignment, Judyth exposed me to every aspect of a starting writing career, from script writing, copyediting and writing press releases.

Most important, I now understand how the Internet is changing the way we receive our news. Thanks to The Student Operated Press, I am a part of one the most exciting times in news journalism.
