The Dying Art of Proofreading

There could perhaps be a debate on the subject of proofreading being an art or science. Prudently leaving such discussion and decision to the experts, it may be worthwhile to sidestep this issue and quickly move to the proof of lack of proofreading as observed over a period of time through the headlines of various news papers.


To say the least, the collection below is hilarious while conveying a meaning very different from as intended:


1.      Something Went Wrong in Jet Crash, Expert Says

( Something", really?)

2.      Police Begin Campaign to Run Down Jaywalkers

(Now that`s taking things a bit far!)

3.      Panda Mating Fails; Veterinarian Takes Over

(What a guy!)

4.      Miners Refuse to Work after Death

(These dead are good-for-nothing lazy so-and-so`s!)

5.      Juvenile Court to Try Shooting Defendant

(See if that works any better than a fair trial!)

6.      War Dims Hope for Peace

(I can see where it might have that effect!)

7.      If Strike Isn`t Settled Quickly, It May Last Awhile

(Could there be any doubts?)

8.      Cold Wave Linked to Temperatures

(So sad, who would have thought it to be so!)

9.      Enfield (London) Couple Slain; Police Suspect Homicide

(They may be on to something!)

10.  Red Tape Holds Up New Bridges

(You mean there`s something stronger than duct tape?

11.  Man Struck By Lightning: Faces Battery Charge

(He probably is the battery charge!)

12.  New Study of Obesity Looks for Larger Test Group

(Weren`t they fat enough?)

13.  Astronaut Takes Blame for Gas in Spacecraft

("Eeks". that`s what he gets for eating those beans!)

14.  Kids Make Nutritious Snacks

(Do they taste like chicken?)

15.  Local  High School Dropouts Cut in Half

(Chainsaw Massacre all over again!)

16.  Hospitals are Sued by Seven Foot Doctors

(Boy, are they tall!)

17.  Typhoon Rips Through Cemetery; Hundreds Dead

(Did I read that right?)
