479 Lbs. of Cocaine Seized by CBP in Mayaguez

By SOP newswire

Mayaguez, P.R. — On November 9, 2007, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized 479 pounds of cocaine concealed in a 1997 Ford pick-up.  Passenger and vehicle arrived from the Dominican Republic.

This morning a 41 year old male arrived from the Dominican Republic on board the M/V Caribbean Express. Passenger was referred to secondary inspection along with the vehicle he was transporting into the country.  Customs and Border Protection Officers X-rayed the vehicle and noticed abnormalities in the images.  Further inspection of the pickup revealed a compartment in the bed of the vehicle.  A total of 92 packages containing a white powdery substance were retrieved, content of packages reacted positive for cocaine.  A little over 479 pounds were seized with a street value of $3,259,094.  Vehicle was seized and passenger arrested.

“Customs and Border Protection Officers will continue to work hard –day and night- to avoid that drugs smugglers succeed in introducing narcotics into our communities” said Marcelino Borges, Director Field Operations.

With this case, cocaine seized by Customs and Border Protection in Puerto Rico for first 40 days of fiscal year 2008 totals 554 pounds. Cocaine seized has an estimated street value of over $3,455,876.
