Will SC comply with Real ID Act?

By SOP newswire

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Gov. Mark Sanford has scheduled a news conference today to announce his decision about a requirement the state issue new driver's licenses that meet federal security demands.

Today is the deadline for South Carolina to ask for an extension to meet the provisions of the the Real ID law.

Without the extension, anyone with a South Carolina license would have to go through extra security checks to enter a federal building or board a plane after May 11.

The Homeland Security department pushed for the Real ID program to make driver's licenses more secure following the 9/11 terror attacks.

Sanford has argued against Real ID, saying it will increase cost and wait times at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
