Prisoner Released Early: Too Tubby For Cell

Prisoner Released Early: Too Tubby For Cell

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Canadian prison authorities were forced to release a 450-pound (205 kg) drug gang member this week because he was too large for his cell, the Journal de Montreal newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Michel Lapointe -- known as Big Mike -- was arrested in September 2006 and received a five-year sentence in May this year. The paper said he could not fit on the chair in his Montreal prison cell and when he went to bed, his body protruded six inches (15 cm) on either side."

This isn`t exactly a case of "no jail can hold this tough guy", but I`m sure Big Mike is grateful for his early release.

In America this dude would probably have been released after only a few days, a shyster lawyer would have argued that it`s cruel and unusual punishment to hold a prisoner in a cell that`s too small for him.

What are the Canadians going to do if this fat ex-con commits another crime? They need to prepare for his possible return by transforming two cells into one giant cell.

But I hope Big Mike turns over a new leaf, so he can enjoy life on the outside on an easy chair instead of being cooped up in a dingy prison cell.
