Lady Jailed: She Didn't Return Library Book

By Robert Paul Reyes

I`ve never had any interaction with the criminal justice system, I pay my taxes on time, and I drive like an old lady. I don`t have to worry about a cop knocking on my door and reading me my Miranda rights -- as long as I never move to Independence, Iowa.

"An Iowa woman has been arrested because she failed to return a library book.

Thirty-nine-year-old Shelly Koontz was arrested Thursday night on a fifth-degree theft charge. She is accused of keeping `The Freedom Writers Diary,` which she checked out from the public library in nearby Jesup in April."

Let him who has never kept a library book past its due date hurl the first book at Koontz.

I fear the IRS and I always mail my return before April 15th, but the blue-haired librarian doesn`t scare me and I don`t always return items in a timely manner.

But maybe I should because I wouldn`t want the world to know which library books I check out. I write essays on diverse and sundry subjects, and I sometimes check out questionable books strictly for research purposes.

According to the AP article a cop even visited her home in September. The city of Independence must resemble fictional Mayberry if cops are dispatched to retrieve library books.

This poor woman has been needlessly humiliated; I hope she hasn`t been traumatized so badly that she never darkens the door of a library again.
