Florida Vote Could Decide Fate of Wolves, Polar Bears and the Environment

Florida Vote Could Decide Fate of Wolves, Polar Bears and the Environment

By SOP newswire2

Dear Judyth,

As someone who lives in Florida, you have an extraordinarily important role to play in protecting wolves, polar bears and other imperiled wildlife and the environment for our children and grandchildren.

In less than two weeks, you or someone you know will have the opportunity to vote for the next President of the United States. It`s a historic election that will have important implications for our environment and for the future of species struggling against the threat of extinction.

In this important election, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund has endorsed Senator Obama for President. Here`s why ?

1. Judgment.
Senator Obama and his running mate, Senator Joe Biden, have lifetime scores of 85% and 93%, respectively, on Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund`s Conservation Report Card, consistently voting to protect our polar bears, wolves and other wildlife.

In contrast, Senator John McCain has a lifetime score of just 39% on key votes concerning the fate of our imperiled wildlife -- missing all of the wildlife votes that we looked at over the past year.

Even worse, McCain selected Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee  -- someone who has...

  • Championed brutal aerial killing of wolves
  • Opposed vital protections for Cook Inlet Beluga whales (some of the rarest whales in the world); and
  • Sued the federal government to eliminate protections for threatened polar bears.

2. Leadership.
For more than 35 years, the Endangered Species Act has protected America`s wildlife and special wild places, helping to rescue bald eagles, California condors and other animals from the brink of extinction.

When the Bush/Cheney Administration moved to gut the Endangered Species Act earlier this summer, Senator Obama immediately announced that, if elected, he would reverse any attempt to undermine the law`s protections. Senator McCain sat silent.

3. Vision.
Scientists say that global warming could cause polar bears and as many as a third of the planet`s species to go extinct.

While the McCain/Palin campaign studiously avoids most environmental issues and offers energy proposals based largely on Big Oil`s wish list, the Obama/Biden campaign is offering solid positions in nearly every environmental area, including a commitment to forward-looking energy solutions.

For these reasons, we are endorsing the Obama/Biden ticket. Please vote on Election Day and forward this email to at least 3 friends and neighbors who care about wildlife.

When it comes to sound environmental policy, to conserving wilderness areas and wildlife, to standing up to the special interests, there really is no contest between the two tickets.

This is a very important election for our wildlife and it could well be decided in your state. Please forward this message and help us get the word out to other caring people in Florida.

Respectfully,

Rodger Schlickeisen
President
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
