BALAD, Iraq – The Iraqi National Police and Iraqi Special Forces soldiers captured three known insurgents today during a meeting at the Mahdi Mosque in Balad.

Members of 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division were ready to assist the Iraqi forces with a quick reaction force, but their assistance was not needed.

The captured insurgents have been known to use prayer times as a cover for planning attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces, according to Lt. Col. Kevin Dunlop, commander of 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division.

“They have been deliberately taking advantage of the Iraqi security forces’ attempt to respect the sanctity of mosque activities,” he said.
