Review Of: Punisher: War Zone

By Garrett Godwin

Somebody has to punish the corrupt

Recently released on DVD, Punisher: War Zone is the third film adaptation of the Marvel Dark Knight with British actor Ray Stevenson in the title role as the classic vigilante antihero.  Ever since his family was brutally gunned down at the hands of mobsters, Frank Castle has been reborn as the Punisher.  Using his years of combat and law enforcement, he becomes a one-man judge, jury, and executioner in his crusade against organized crime.

His latest target reputed kingpin Billy Russoti (Dominic West), and caught in the crossfire was an undercover federal agent Castle killed.  Wracked with guilt, he tries to make amends with his widow Angela (Julie Benz) and daughter Grace, and decides to pack up and leave New York.  However, like Castle, Billy has been reborn into the disfigured Jigsaw and enlists the aid of crazy cousin Loony Bin Jim (Doug Hutchinson) to take care of Castle once and for all.  Now, the Punisher must find and protect Angela and her daughter against the dangerous, demented duo while at the same time avoid being caught by the Punisher Task Force, which includes Paul Budiansky (Colin Salmon), partner of the slain federal agent.

Punisher: War Zone is more gruesome, violent, and action-packed than the previous reincarnations yet it stays true to the origins of the character.  Though it did not explore more into Castle`s backstory, the film offers to show some of his humanity through his interactions with young Grace -- giving him a chance for redemption.  Like Batman, the Punisher does not have any special powers and he does not live a double life.  However, he is ruthless, cunning, and smart with a willingness to punish those who prey on the innocent, and he will not rest until every single last one of them is wiped off the face of this earth.

Punisher: War Zone is available on DVD.
