Kenny Chesney's Flip Flop Summer Tour Airs April 21st
Great American Country special takes viewers deep inside creative process as Chesney puts together 2007 tour spectacular
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Country music superstar Kenny Chesney started planning his Flip Flop Summer Tour 2007 long before the new year rolled around. Chesney, known as one of the most hands-on artists in country music, takes GAC viewers deep behind the scenes as he plans, creates and rehearses for the year's biggest music extravaganza in an exclusive two-part GAC series, Kenny Chesney: The Making of the Flip Flop Summer Tour, airing April 21 and 28 at 9 p.m. ET on Great American Country.
"I was even on stage [during last year's The Road & The Radio tour], doing the show, taking mental notes about how we are going to do this new show," Chesney says in the GAC special.
GAC's two-part program opens with a scene from a November 2006 production meeting at which Chesney lays out his grand vision for the 2007 event.
"We could do the same thing every year, with the same video wall and the same set," Chesney says. "but people come to see a great show... and I always want them to walk away thinking this year's was the best one yet."
GAC cameras follow Chesney and crew over six months as they plot, plan and produce what is sure to be the most widely-attended concert tour of the year. More than 1.3 million fans saw Kenny Chesney live in 2006, more than any other artist of any music genre.
Crews shot more than 150 hours of video and 2,500 still photos to document the planning process for the Flip Flop Summer Tour, all closely overseen by the artist himself. The intimate two-part GAC special illustrates the decisions to go intro everything from set design to animation and from ticket prices to T-shirts. At every step, Chesney demonstrates his commitment to making this year's tour once again the ultimate fan experience.
Chesney, who played nine major stadiums last year, has already sold out NFL stadiums in Boston, Detroit and Philadelphia. His stadium shows in Cleveland, Seattle and Pittsburgh are nearly sold-out. The bigger the show, the more Chesney takes nothing for granted about what happens onstage as he keeps a close watch over every aspect of the planning, set-up, rehearsal and day-of-concert activities.
"I have to be involved in every single step, so that when I step on that stage, I know I am going to give the fans the best experience they can possibly have that night," Chesney says. "Just as if you're building your dream home. That's what we do every year."
Part One of the GAC special (April 21, 9 p.m. ET) captures Chesney as he makes creative decisions on stage design, lighting issues and merchandise. It documents rehearsals with his band and the songs that will performed during the 2007 tour and follows the singer/songwriter as he and the band strip it down to just the music --without any production--for their marathon "Keg in the Closet" mini-tour of college bars around the Southeast.
Part Two (April 28, 9 p.m. ET) hones in on the final ramp-up for the tour and joins Chesney, band, crew and production staff in Omaha, Neb. as they prepare for the opening night of the Flip Flop Summer Tour 2007. With more than 17,000 on hand, this episode brings to GAC viewers the exhilarating climax of the months of preparation and weeks of technical and music rehearsals.
"Kenny Chesney is both an extraordinary artist and an entrepreneur, who goes to great lengths to give his audience an exceptional concert experience. GAC viewers will get to see the process from start to finish as he oversees the creation of one of the most exciting shows of the year," said Sarah Trahern, senior vice president of programming for Great American Country.
