The Writing's on the Wal - Up Close and Personal with Anthony Wal
I am speaking with Musician/Song Writer ‘Anthony Wal’ who is here to talk about his Music career.
Hello Anthony, Tell me about yourself?
I was born and raised in Montreal (QC) Canada. My background is comprised of Canadian, European, and South American roots. I speak English, French, Spanish, and Italian. I enjoy sports, which have been a part of my life since I was 4 years of age. Along with that, I’m a very artistic, creative person and I’m attracted to people with these qualities. To describe myself I’m expressive, positive, energetic, live-wire, optimistic, determined, crazy, and passionate. Last but not least, I have an intense connection with writing. I don’t know what it is, but writing gives me such a rush - it’s insane… and I love it!
How long have you been a musician?
I’ve been a musician for over 10 years and have been writing for about 15 years.
What inspired you to be involved in music?
I think that my inspiration came from mixture of sources including my mother - who used to sing in a church choir, a high school pal of mine, Anthony who used to be in a band with me, and all artists who are really passionate about their art. When I see other artists doing what they love and performing in front of an audience, it pumps so much adrenaline inside me a feeling that I cannot simply explain in words. So, I guess that I got very inspired by visualizing the opportunity to play in front of people and share my song writing creations with them. One person I have to include is my buddy, D.K. Ryu - an exceptional jazz pianist from South Korea (presently living in Montreal). He is such an amazing and intelligent musician who constantly keeps energizing, motivating, and teaching me with his love for music.
Tell me about “Miss You” and “Kiss in Rome?” Were they written for anyone in particular?
“Miss You” has a little more to it than the title itself. It wasn’t written for anyone in particular. It’s a group of different events in my life and other friends’ lives. In a nutshell, it talks about ‘distance’ that can exist in every kind of relationship (mother/daughter, father/son, best friends, etc.) - not just the traditional couple relationship. At one point or another, a person might feel ‘far’ from that special someone because of a lack of communication or a lack of ‘alone’ time with each other. That’s why I decided to include the odd lyric of “I miss you when you’re near me… even when you’re next to me.” You don’t have to ‘literally’ be far from someone in order to feel distant. Did I confuse you enough? (smiling) If I did, call me and we’ll talk.
Regarding “Kiss in Rome”, it’s quite easy to explain. This song is about a girl I met in Milan, Italy. We spent a really fun and crazy weekend in Rome visiting different sites aimlessly and kind of flirting with each other. After it was over, I told some friends and relatives of mine about the weekend. They had a hard time believing that ‘nothing’ happened between us - if you catch my drift. I stuck to my story and wrote “We just had that kiss in Rome” and… that’s it. After all, I am a gentleman.
Share with me and my readers about your awards?
I have received a number of awards and nominations over the last couple of years. They include a recognition of achievement from the annual CMT/NSAI (Nashville Songwriter’s Assoc. International) Song writing Competition for my first single “Mexico” which you can find on my EP available on iTunes, a nomination for Best International Artist/Band - the Orange County Music Awards in Anaheim, CA, two nominations for Best Melodic Group/Artist and Best Pop Group/Artist - the All Access Magazine Music Awards in Hollywood, CA, and two nominations for ‘POP’ Artist of the Year and ‘POP’ Male Singer/Songwriter of the Year - Los Angeles Music Awards, which has been a launching pad for a number of successful artists such as The Black-Eyed Peas, System of a Down, No Doubt, Sugar Ray, Korn, and many more.
Where can my readers listen to your music and or purchase CD’s?
The best place to listen to Anthony Wal music is on MySpace: www.myspace.com/anthonywal. As well, you can get all news, updates, reviews, and so forth on MySpace. The Anthony Wal website - www.anthonywalmusic.com - basically acts as an information outlet with most of the features that the MySpace site offers, along with different aspects. But, we’ll probably keep the MySpace site as the primary source for news and updates. I also encourage fans to subscribe to Anthony Wal’s MySpace Blog: http://blog.myspace.com/anthonywal. Stay informed on upcoming events, news, and updates by visiting this link. And, of course, you can purchase the Anthony Wal - EP, which is available exclusively on iTunes. The EP was put up on iTunes in order to make some songs available for download while the new CD is being completed - it will be available soon.
Any music videos or concerts scheduled?
Music videos will be available in the near future. I am presently talking with a couple of directors about the idea of producing a video or two. It is an important aspect in terms of getting more exposure, but I don’t want to rush anything. It’s another form of art and I want to take my time to develop it properly with the right people. In terms of concerts, a schedule is being worked on presently. I am trying to set up a few acoustic shows while finishing the next CD, which isn’t so easy to balance. I tend to work more in the studio, but I plan to do some shows in the Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto areas in the coming months. After that, we’ll talk about organizing other shows in select U.S. cities.
Share with me your future plans as a musician?
I plan to perform more shows and keep writing lyrics and music as much as possible. As long as ideas keep coming into my head, I’ll continue writing and creating music. It’s something I absolutely love to do and will never stop. As well, I plan to participate in a big concert event that is presently being worked on for spring 2008. Many exciting bands and artists are expected to perform at a concert in Ottawa to raise awareness for global warming. In addition, I am looking forward to working with a few local film directors and producers in order to write songs for their film projects. Writing music for film and television has always intrigued me and I plan to pursue it more diligently.
Well, there you have it folks, I would like to thank Anthony for the wonderful interview and be sure to read more about him on his websites.
