TSA Goon Squad Harasses Ron Paul Associate
"Steve Bierfeldt says the Transportation Security Administration pulled him aside for extra questioning in March. He was carrying a pocket edition of the U.S. Constitution and an iPhone capable of making audio recordings. And he used them.
On a recording a TSA agent can be heard berating Bierfeldt. One sample: `You want to play smartass, and I`m not going to play your f**king game.`
Bierfeldt is director of development for the Campaign for Liberty, an outgrowth of the Ron Paul presidential campaign. He was returning from a regional conference March 29 when TSA screeners at Lambert-St. Louis (Missouri) International Airport saw a metal cash box in his carry-on bag. Inside was more than $4,700 dollars in cash -- proceeds from the sale of political merchandise like T-shirts and books." CNN.Com
Followers of Ron Paul are a little bit eccentric, and I`m not surprised that TSA screeners singled out a Ron Paul fan for extra scrutiny. Anyone who is foaming at the mouth and has a blank stare should be thoroughly investigated.
But Steve Bierfeldt is not your typical Ron Paul devotee; he is an intelligent, eloquent and normal human being. The TSA screeners were way out of line; they mistreated Bierfeldt and deprived him of his civil liberties.
Bierfeldt is by no means the only passenger who has been harassed by TSA thugs, Bierfeldt`s harassment at the hands of TSA goons only came to light because he recorded the interrogation with his iPhone.
It`s imprudent but not illegal to carry large sums of cash, and the TSA rent-a-brutes shouldn`t have assumed that Bierfeldt was a criminal or a terrorist because he had a cash box stuffed with money.
"The American Civil Liberties Union has taken up Bierfeldt`s cause and is suing Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, whose department includes the TSA. Their complaint alleges that Bierfeldt was `subjected to harassing interrogation, and unlawfully detained.`" CNN
Conservatives often complain that the ACLU only defends commies, perverts and terrorists, but most of the ACLU`s clients are average folks like Bierfeldt.
We shouldn`t accept brutality at the hands of the TSA creeps as normal operating procedure in this post 9/11 world. I have little love for Ron Paul fanatics, but Bierfeldt is my hero. Bierfeldt didn`t just shrug and say "What can you do?" he is suing the TSA and thereby protecting the civil liberties of all Americans.
