Apartment Residents Told To Take Down American Flags

Apartment Residents Told To Take Down American Flags

By Robert Paul Reyes

"At the Oaks Apartments in Albany, the management can fly their own flag advertising one and two bedroom apartments - but residents have been told they can`t fly any flags at all.

Jim Clausen flies the American flag from the back of his motorcycle. He has a son in the military heading back to Iraq, and the flag - he said - is his way of showing support.

He was told to remove the red, white and blue from both of his rides, or face eviction.

Residents we talked to who had been approached to take down their flags all told us the same thing: that management told them the flags could be offensive because they live in a diverse community." Read More

I own my own home and I proudly fly the American flag -- it will be a cold day in hell before a bureaucrat forces me to take it down.

Folks who live in apartments and condos should enjoy the same civil liberties as those of us who own our own homes. Unfortunately, all too often apartment managers are tyrants who let power go to their heads, and they enact ridiculous rules to make themselves feel important.

I live in a blue-collar neighborhood and my fellow residents are black, brown and white, but the thing that unites us is the Red, White and Blue.

America is a politically, religiously and culturally diverse nation, but what unites us is our love of freedom symbolized by the Stars and Stripes.

When the American flag is viewed as a controversial or divisive symbol, I worry that people have lost sight of what our great country stands for.

I`m a liberal, but even the fact that some right-wing nuts drape themselves in Old Glory hasn`t diminished my love for the American flag.

I urge Jim Clausen and his fellow apartment residents to do the patriotic thing, and continue to proudly fly the American flag. I hope the American Civil Liberties Union takes up their cause, they need all the help they can get.
