Top Ten Things Americans Should Be Grateful For This Xmas

Top Ten Things Americans Should Be Grateful For This Xmas

By Robert Paul Reyes

PASSAGE OF THE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL

The. Senate gave the American people an early Christmas present Thursday morning. Senators approved the $871 billion Patient Protection and affordable Care Act 60-39. For passage, 51 votes were needed, no Republicans voted in favor of the bill.

Millions of hard-working Americans are breathing a sigh of relief, finally they will be able to afford health care.

THE SUCCESS OF SUSAN BOYLE

"`Britain`s Got Talent` runner-up Susan Boyle  is dominating the charts. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Boyle`s debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, will lord over the Billboard 200 chart yet again next week, notching an impressive fourth consecutive week in the #1 position thanks to another 661,000 units shifted. Since its release last month, Boyle`s disc of covers and holiday favorites has sold nearly 2.5 million copies, making it one of the year`s top sellers."

MTV.Com

The dowdy and humble Susan Boyle is outselling the stylish and outrageous Lady Gaga, and all of the other pop sensations of the moment. Boyle`s success is our success, it`s a triumph of style over substance, and genuineness over phoniness.

There`s a Susan Boyle album under my tree, I bought it for myself because I wanted to make sure I wouldn`t be disappointed on Christmas day.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS

As we run into the mall to buy junk we don`t need, the Salvation Army volunteers are standing out in the cold soliciting donations for folks who are in dire need of the basic necessities of life. Drop a coin in their kettles, and give them a pat on the back this year.

OUR TROOPS WHO ARE SERVING OUR NATION IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN

I am vehemently opposed to the illegal, immoral and senseless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but I have nothing but praise for our brave men and women who serve our nation proudly.

TEACHERS

Most of our teachers are underpaid and underappreciated, and right now they are enjoying a well-deserved vacation from their young charges. Most of us know a friend or a neighbor who is a teacher, this holiday season let us show them how much we appreciate them.

NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT WEB SITES LIKE THE SOP

The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal no longer enjoy a monopoly on the news. Thanks to Web sites like "The Student Operated Press", the democratization of the news is a reality. Citizen journalists can put out their two cents worth on the Internet.

HD TV

Watching regular TV is like a legally blind person reading Playboy magazine. I`m not a materialistic person, but I couldn`t live without my HD TV.

CNN AND MSNBC

Watching the Fox News Network for five minutes, makes me eternally grateful for the unbiased and objective reporting of the news professionals at CNN and MSNBC.

PRESIDENT OBAMA

Obama has made a few mistakes, but for the most part his first year in office has been a resounding success, culminating in the passage of the landmark Health Care Reform bill. Americans of all political persuasions should give thanks this year for President Obama.

MY READERS

On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my readers who have taken the time to send me an email of support and encouragement.
