Want to Follow Trends? Watch Topeka's Name

By Tony Graff

Bill Bunten, Mayor of Topeka Kansas, announced that for the month of March, the name of Topeka has been unofficially changed to Google, Kansas. Come to find out that he`s doing this in the hopes that Google, one of the biggest names in the Internet, will pick the city to pilot a new, faster, internet connection, boasting download rates of up to a gigabit per second.

Mayor of Topeka Kansas
This isn`t the first time such a name change has occurred. In 1998, the mayor changed Topeka`s name to Topikachu, in honor of the Pokemon fad. I`m sure the citizens were proud of their city for that.
If all of this isn`t sounding ridiculous, then let`s take a stroll back to 2005 when a small Texas town was renamed DISH. This was because Dish Network wanted an ad campaign they couldn`t get from a TV or website. The only difference is in exchange for renaming the city DISH, all the residents got free cable for a decade.
If this marketing ploy catches on, think about your next road-trip. You could plan it out like like you would your shopping list.
At the end of the day, I`m wondering what ideas Topeka is going to have for the next fad. Maybe they`ll name it Facebook, Kansas. I`d be a fan of that.
