sweet nectar

sweet nectar

By Kathryn Were Omwandho

It took awhile but now I know,

This sweet nectar is poison,

So many warned me,

Asked me why,

Why, this nectar,

Just because it’s the sweetest

Means nothing,

Just because it’s more,

Means nothing,

It took a long while but now,

I see my reflection in this nectar,

I’m ugly,

Like an addict with no future,

So hard to leave,

All I had to do is put it down,

‘Just because,’ means nothing,

Sometimes the whole world is right,

And you’re the one that’s wrong,

That sweet nectar was poison,

Afterwards, it only burnt my tongue.
