National Policeman Killed gunmen in Baghdad firefight

BAGHDAD " Five extremist gunmen killed an Iraqi National Police officer outside a bank in the Sheik Marouf neighborhood of the Iraqi capital at approximately 11 a.m. May 30.

Lt. Col. Mohammed Shaka Mohammed was killed as he prepared to enter the bank to withdrawal the payroll of a National Police unit. Five gunmen, armed with pistols, shot and killed him.

A Coalition Forces patrol nearby responded to the sounds of small-arms fire. A firefight between the extremists and Coalition Forces ensued.

At the end of the firefight, one extremist gunman was killed, three civilian vehicles were damaged and there was light damage to surrounding buildings.

There were no civilian casualties resulting from the firefight.

Both Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces have secured the area.

The attack is under investigation. Coalition Forces are dispatching engineer assets to assess damage to the surrounding buildings and will make repairs, as needed.
